Perception, Performance and Educational Demands in Alternative Feeding focused on Nursery and OB Ward Nurses

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify whether alternative feeding performance and educational demands of nursery and OB (Obstetrics) ward nurses affects newborn feeding in preventing nipple confusion. Another aim of this research was to provide basic data to help in developing nursing intervention strategies and promote proper breast-feeding and alternative feeding performance.
Methods: This descriptive research assessed and evaluated the alternative feeding performance and educational demands of nursery and OB ward nurses. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Win 17.0 program and the measures used were t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square. The educational demands level was measured according to working departments using t-test.
Results: The experience of performing alternative feeding was significantly different according to work place (x²=25.54, p=＜.001), work position (x²=12.34, p=.002) and Rooming-in system (x²=4.08, p=＜.047). The knowing of alternative feeding according to work place (x²=23.81, p=＜.001). work position (x²=11.66, p=.003) and Breast feeding experience (x²=8.45, p=.037). The educational demands in alternative feeding showed significant difference according to Breast feeding experience in married pearson 82 people (x²=8.04, p=.045).
Conclusion: The success of promoting breast milk and alternative feeding techniques also depends on the medical team who looks after the mother and the newborn. In particular, nurses are responsible for supplying knowledge on proper breast feeding and alternative feeding and thereafter, assessing mothers" compliance. In effect, nurses should be provided with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to play their roles in promoting proper breast milk and alternative feeding performance in actual settings.
